Supreme Commander ACU mod Part 1 Fibreglass 1

Fibreglass

After teasing everyone with the spy shot (above; the only photo anyone has seen so far) it was time to start working on the fibreglass layers. By now, the robot had been moved to the garage so that there was more room, and also crucially, better ventillation for working with the liquid polyester.

The liquid polyester resin used to set the fibreglass weave only comes in five litre cans, but over 30 litres of the stuff was needed to finish covering the entire robot. The fibreglass weave came in a 50 x 2m roll, which provided an overall thickness of just 0.5 to 1cm. Some parts were thicker than others depending if they contained a joint or needed additional support considering the overall size, weight and need for shipping.

Naturally, the legs had to be made extra strong.

The chest is also 1cm thick because a cavity needs to be made that houses the PC, therefore it needs to be able to support the weight of that and everything connected above like the large arms and head.
